Water softener salt is specifically manufactured for use in water softening systems and boasts high purity to ensure optimal performance and minimal maintenance. 

• Primary Ingredient: The main component is sodium chloride (NaCl), typically at a purity level of 99.5% or higher.
• Impurities: Compared to table salt, which may have additives, or rock salt, which has more insoluble matter, water softener salt is refined to minimize impurities like calcium sulfate or dirt particles, which can accumulate in the brine tank over time.
• Additives: Some specialized salts may include additives like resin-cleaning agents or iron-fighting formulas (e.g., sodium bisulfate) to help prevent iron and manganese buildup and rust stains in the system and pipes.
